Bella Poarch is an Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) who frequently expresses her support for the fight against anti-Asian racism. On March 19, 2021, she posted a TikTok video in an attempt to popularize the cause. Poarch loves getting inked and has several tattoos all over her body. One such tattoo stirred up controversy as it resembled the Rising Sun Flag.
The tattoo symbolized Japanese imperialism which was offensive to East and Southeast Asians. She apologized in September 2020 and had the tattoo covered.
Career
Bella Poarch started her social media career in January 2020 when she created her TikTok account. She started posting comedy videos that attracted a lot of attention. In April, she started posting videos pertaining to cosplay and games. Bella Poarch’s popularity increased in August 2020 when she started posting lip-sync videos that went viral on the internet. Among them was the video in which she was lip-syncing to Millie B’s song “Soph Aspin Send.” This particular video became extremely popular among fans and went on to collect millions of views in a short period of time. Bella Poarch’s lip-sync video of Soph Aspin Send established her as a popular TikToker. Her TikTok account currently has more than 70 million fans.
Bella Poarch’s big breakthrough came on May 14, 2021, when she released her debut single, “Build a Bitch.” She also released the song’s official music video on YouTube, featuring other popular social media influencers like Bretman Rock, Mia Khalifa, and Valkyrae. Speaking about the song in a podcast titled The Courage and Nadeshot Show, Poarch said that Build a Bitch traces back to her own childhood, when she was bullied because of her ethnicity and background. She also said that she wanted her debut song to help people be more confident about who they are. The song also featured on several music charts, including the Billboard Hot 100 and the UK singles chart, where it peaked at numbers 56 and 30, respectively.
